The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government-sponsored public service program managed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It is aimed at developing student personalities and civic responsibilities through voluntary community service.
Motto: The official watchword is "NOT ME BUT YOU". This underlines the spirit of selfless service, putting the community's welfare before oneself.
Launch Date: Formally introduced on 24 September 1969 by the then Education Minister Dr. V.K. R.V. Rao, during the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi.
Target Group: Active in senior secondary schools (+2 level), technical institutions, colleges, and universities across India.
